| A Brief History of Rugby in Knin |
|||||||||||
| Rugby has more of a history in Knin than many people might think. Almost 20 years ago local man Carlo Grgic arranged for the Croatian Cup Final to be played in Knin, contested then between Split and Zagreb. Unfortunately before the game could take off in the area war bubbled to the surface and exploded, leaving large reserves of untapped talent in the sport behind. Then in 2003 Hiberno Director Alan Moore, with some friends, decided it might be fun to try start a club in the town. It began quietly and gradually local athletes picked up on the idea but having no firm place to play, exacerbated by the destruction of the 2nd football field in Knin, the clubs' attempts at full registration suffered. However with fresh resolve in 2005, along with the backing of a number of prominent local and national figures, the club rose to its' feet and now is set to enter both youth and senior competition in the 2006-7 season. As the President of the club is Mr. Frano Kristo, who is also the Deputy Mayor of Knin and from home of Bosnian Rugby, Zenica. Original player and member Mr. Veljko Cadjenovic, is Vice-President and Sarajevo-born Ms. Zeljka Lukic takes up the post of Club Secretary. With a tough task to mobilise the troops and prepare, the club have been very lucky to gain the support of RFC Kilkenny and the Munster Rugby Supporters Club. The previous strain on non-existent equipment will not be a factor and now all players and coaches will have sufficient resources to take part in league and cup competitions. And the circle of history has come the full turn. The same Carlo Grgic who sought to kick off rugby in Knin, now is a club coach and responsible for recruiting players from the High School in Knin where he is a P.E. teacher. It will not be easy for the next 2-3 years, but long term RK Knin have plans to gain promotion to the top division of Croatian rugby and in 5-10 years to start competing with the best in the country. |
